Island Adventure Tours
News and Updates

October / November 2005

Summer Season is Over!

What a great summer! Our 5th summer was the best yet and we would like to thank all of our guides and tour partners. Also a big thanks to our Student Intern Melly Rademacher from Goettingen Germany who helped out a lot and taught us to say "Diddle nich rom!" We saw an abundance of wildlife, ate a lot of feasts and generally had a great time. What an honor to share this with so many awesome families from around the globe!

Winter is almost here and some exciting winter adventures await. Like the British Columbia ski season! See our Winter Adventures link for more information.

Island Adventure Tours offers new tour to Banff, Jasper and Yoho National Parks!

We have scouted out the best of these majestic Parks and have put them all in a 7 day tour. See more mountains in a day than most see in a life time! This tour will include lots of hiking, wildlife viewing, adventures and of course expert guiding and gourmet food. Click on Alpine Hiking on our homepage for more information. This trip is designed to add-on to our Vancouver Island 7 day tours to make a 14 day adventure like no other.

Island Adventure Tours Offers Surfing Safaris for 2009!

Next summer we start offering a new tour to the West Coast of Vancouver Island that features giant trees, wildlife viewing and of course…surfing! Our Surf Camp will be located in the beautiful Bella Pacifica Campground right on the beaches doorstep. Put a group together and learn to surf or upgrade your technique! We depart from Victoria on Friday mornings for this amazing adventure.

"In The Spirit of Dance" is a huge success!

Island Adventure Tours sponsored this event and also assisted with the Event Management. The Saturday night showcase performance was sold out 30 minutes before the show started and was jam-packed. The performances were pure magic as Canada's top Aboriginal Dance Troupe's shared the spirit of dance. Congratulations to George Taylor and his family for such an amazing event. We hope to be a part of a new event next September that will feature the top Aboriginal Dance troupes from Canada as well as some from the USA, New Zealand, Japan and Fiji. Stay tuned for details as it will most likely be in mid-September 2009.

Our site is up and running and we invite you to come and explore the largest gathering of aboriginal dancers to ever occur in Canada! Our new site will promote our event coming to Victoria this October. We have also confirmed the venues for this event. The 2 showcase performances will be in the Theatre at the Victoria Conference Center. These gala events will feature 6 different aboriginal dances troupes each night.

Island Adventure Tours and the Le-La-La Dancers will be hosting a 3-day gathering to celebrate aboriginal dance! Over 15 dance troupes from all regions of Canada will be in Victoria from October 13-15. The public is welcome to the conference and also the 2 nights of dance performances. The gala evening shows will feature 5 dance troupes and tickets are only $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and youth.

Why not visit us during the day for adventures and have amazing cultural performances at night? Learn to sea kayak, watch salmon spawn (prime season in October!), hike in the lush rainforest or paddle a cedar dugout canoe. A rare opportunity to see Canada’s best aboriginal dancers all gathered in one place.

Island Adventure Tours is also creating Tour Packages for visitors to come and see this amazing event.

Welcome Hiromi Shimbutsu!

Island Adventure Tours welcomes Hiromi Shimbutsu. Hiromi is from Tokyo Japan and is here to work for one week on the National Aboriginal Dance Symposium that Island Adventure Tours and the Le-La-La Dancers will be hosting in October of 2005.

We have had her out hiking, crabbing and doing wildlife photography. And this was all in the first few hours! She has talent in organizing special events and managing projects. Boy did we have some ideas for her! She hopes to come back in October with a group to see the National Aboriginal Dance Symposium, In The Spirit of Dance – 2005. We hope also to see her back in the summer of 2009 with a group of Eco Adventurers! Hiromi is also working on our latest project the “Eco Island Adventure School” as we set up programs for 2009 and 2009.

Maui Wowie!

! Just returned from two weeks in Maui. I go there because I love the Hawaiians and their music, the fruit and the seafood, the snorkeling and the surf, and leis and coconut oil. Mai Tais are also good. So is Hula Pie and Lava Flows! So “yes” I was on vacation but I also couldn’t help myself from doing research on Eco Tourism. Or should I say “how not to do eco-tourism”!

From the onset the sheer amount of “Eco-Tourism” promotion materials is enough to weigh down your bags and car. How can this be eco-friendly?. They must log a rainforest everyday to print all this stuff! Then there are the agents. They are everywhere. They will sell you a tour to here and a tour to there but they haven’t been to any of them. Special prices if you buy 2 tours, free Mai Tai’s, more special price if you view the timeshares, free Ma Tai’s, as a matter of fact we have free Ma Tai’s throughout the tour. I don’t know about you but when I am on holiday and trying to see some wilderness and wildlife I don’t need the Mai Tai’s and the Timeshare presentations.

Anyway, I digress. This is the least of the problems in Maui. The problem is too many people taking too many people to see very small and fragile things. Dozens of huge ships descend onto Molikini Crater every day dumping hundreds of sunscreen soaked snorkelers and divers. Then they leave to chase about 9 turtles around at “Turtle Town”. That name I don’t get? Does it mean there are so many turtles that it is like a town? Or do they mean it is such a dangerous nasty place for turtles that it is really like a downtown inner city? Anyway I think “Turtle Town” is suffering from a little “Urban Blight”.

I am just a tourist when I am in Maui and I look at things from a naturalist’s perspective and as an active vacationer. Locals on the other hand look at things differently and the hot issue right now is development. I am not talking about the development we have around Victoria or most likely your hometown. I am talking about Las Vegas style development. 1,000 room hotels that level entire eco-systems to be built on the waterfront. Golf courses that use more water to water the grass than the whole island uses for drinking.

But hey! That’s their battle not mine. Were still trying to stop Timber West from clear cutting Vancouver Island. I was however, inspired by the aggressive marketing of successful Maui Tour companies and the number of operations, boats, advertisements and offices they had. I was also inspired to not be like them. Taking 30 people out to see the rainforest just to buy glossy brochures or taking 50 people kayaking through the islands just to buy a billboard, doesn’t make sense to the spirit of Eco-Tourism.

So I enjoyed Maui and its glorious beauty. I rented a bike instead of going on a tour. I rented snorkeling gear, surfing gear and hiked on my own. Didn’t go to a timeshare presentation (probably drank a couple of free Mai Tai’s though!). But would I spend my money on eco-tourism gone crazy and contribute to eco-system destruction? No thanks. Burning 200 gallons of gas a day to see the whales isn’t worth it.

Maui is an island and by definition a fragile place, as are all islands. Can it sustain more and more high end hotels for more and more golfers and pseudo eco–tourists? No, of course not. The little diesel-burning power generation station is already operating at over-capacity.

When I returned home to Vancouver Island I felt so lucky to live on an island with a different fate. Or at least a different timeframe. Vancouver Island has never had a population like Hawaii and is probably 500 years away from getting near their numbers. Yes we have development issues but on a different scale. We actually have wildlife like the densest population of cougars in the world. We have a healthy bear population, thousands of otters and a million seals. Eagles are everywhere, sea lions, wolves and Orcas abound. The list goes on but our main saving grace is that we have less than a million people living here.

Tofino now gets well over a million Tourists a year. How many more can it handle? How many can the 1,600 residents handle a year? How many more boats can those Orcas handle buzzing around them all day?

Lets learn from Maui. Or there will be about 9 deer, 2 bears and a beaver left on Vancouver Island some day (apparently there are a few Wild Pigs left on Maui. And they have tours to hunt them!).

IAT Welcomes Mandy Daly to the IAT Guide Team!

Mandy has wrangled horses and cooked on Trail Rides, so don’t give her any guff!. She has also been a wild mushroom harvester and glass blower. Most importantly she knows the island well and is an awesome outdoorsperson (is that a word?).

Mandy will be leading Rainforest hikes and treks and some of our “Eco-Women Adventure Trips”. And at the end of the season she is going to teach me how to make a fortune picking giant Pine mushrooms!

Welcome Jong Hyun Ki!

This guy is awesome! He is from Seoul Korea and will be working with us for a few months. His goal? To become an Outdoor Leader! His background is in business though and we want to tap that expertise. How about a trade?  Jong will be working on marketing initiatives when he is not hiking and kayaking.

Our new movie showcases our Wild West Coast on clips from our Island Adventure Tours. Check it out on our homepage and click on the movie link.

It is Confirmed, Austria is actually Heaven!

A recent 8-day trip to Austria made me feel like I was never coming back because I had actually died and gone to heaven. These people are born skiers which means they are like me. I felt kinship instantly and we reveled in the joy of winter paradise. St. Anton and Kitzhbuel are serious ski hills where one could easily spend a season or a lifetime. But low and behold who had the best powder snow? Back home here at Mt. Washington. First day back I had a foot and a half of fresh snow. Didn’t see that in Austria!

We did see Bode Miller win a World Cup Slalom race in St. Anton though and we cheered like crazy for Canadian Thomas Grandi (10th). What an absolute blast Austria is! So please hire me to lead your group through the Austrian Alps next winter and I guarantee a trip of a lifetime. Approximate cost is $2,000 cdn for a week and I do all of the driving to 2-3 different resorts. I can’t promise that we can ski all of St. Anton’s 80 lifts but I can guarantee that we will see some steeps, deeps and spectacular scenery.

This 7-day program features exciting outdoor activities and outdoor leadership certifications all while learning English as a second language. Please visit our new Adventure School web site at www.esladventureschool.com for more information.

Best of Luck to Naoki! Arrigato!

Island Adventure Tours would like to thank Naoki Yamao, a Japanese intern student, for all of his hard work while working with us for 3 months. Naoki's work resulted in the creation of a new Japanese web site www.canadaadventuretours.com that features all of our day trips completely in Japanese. Naoki also did a lot of work doing research and marketing to Japanese companies. Naoki returned to Japan at the end of January and we will all miss him and his exceptional taste in music! He has also assured us that he will work on his skiing turns and try real hard to do GS carving turns instead of all those quick little squid-dog slalom turns!

IAT will be closed for 10 days from February 13-23

We will be away for a short while doing some research and extreme skiing in Austria. We will be visiting ST. Anton in hopes of trying to ski all of their 80 lifts!

New Video for IAT!

IAT would like to thank inxtera Media and digitaldebbi.com for producing our new video clip. You can check it out by clicking onto our video button on our web sites or clicking here now. The video features shots of Vancouver Island's wildlife, kayaking, whale watching, Le-La-La Dancers and some of our gorgeous hiking trails.

Amazing Bear Sightings!

Our new Bear-Watching Tours have had 100% success. Where do we go? We aren't telling! We depart Victoria at 8 :30 a.m. and return at 5 :30 p.m. It is a long day but we see lots of wildlife. We only offer ths tour from the end of September until the end of November when we know the bears are attracted to salmon-bearing streams. These are beautiful animals and very interesting to watch. We often see eagles, deer, otters, beavers and even elk on these trips.

2003 Proves to be a Record Season!

We were busy this year! Family Adventure Vacations and Eco-Adventures for Singles were very popular. We are open year-round now and will be offering Half-day Sea Kayaking Tours and full-day Rainforest Hiking Tours throughout the winter (howling wind and rain mean we might not go!). We do get some nice weather though, perfect for hiking and paddling.

2004 is our 5th anniversary and we can hardly wait. We have amazing some new tours and this year….drum roll please…free salmon jerky on all of our tours. We just finished making some small snack-size smoked salmon treats for guests. We used Chum and Spring Salmon for these and we hope you will like them.

New Tours for 2004!

A) Hesquiaht Pennisula - Trekking the Escalante Trail. The most amazing 5 days of hiking you can do on Vancouver Island! This 7-day adventure will take you to a hidden gem, a magical secret. Sssshhhhh! Don't tell anyone where you are going. We limit this trip to 2 groups of 4-6 a year. Why? Only a few dozen people hike this trail each year. It is abundant in wildlife and scenic beauty and we do not want to spoil it.

We tour in small groups of experienced hikers. We carry loads of approximately 40 lbs. And sleep on the beach in tents. Food is gourmet, healthy and plentiful. We follow the coastline for 70 km.'s and everyday reveals a different type of terrain.

This route demands experience, coordination and fitness. Do not attempt this trip if you are in poor physical condition, uncordinated or unprepared. We walk on sandy beaches, rocky headlands, boulders, logs, through rivers and muddy jungles. We encounter wildlife like bears and wolves on a daily basis.
We also visit Pacific Rim National Park and Tofino before the Trek. We then fly into Hot Springs Cove and the M.V. Innchanter after the trek.

B) Sailing Tours of the Gulf Islands 3-Day and 6-Day Sailing Adventures through the Gulf Islands, San Juan Islands or Desolation Sound. These are Skippered Tours that allow you do as much sailing as you want. The Skipper also prepares great meals. We travel aboard a 38 ft. Bavaria for extreme comfort. We can fit groups of 3-6. Come see why the Vancouver Island has some of the best cruising in the world!

C) BC Powder Trail - Ski Week for Single Travelers that features the Rocky Mountains and The Kootenays. We depart Calgary and head to Lake Louise and Kicking Horse Resorts in the Rocky Mountains. We then head south to the Kootenays for skiing at Panorama and Fernie. We then complete the circle and return to Calgary to catch flights home. 6 days of skiing at 4 different resorts. We travel in small groups of 5-7 people and stay in lodge accommodation. 3 Departures this winter- January 23, February 13 and March 26.

Special Bonus! We also offer this tour as a Professional Course! Apres ski features 40 minutes of " Practice Management " Instruction. You return home with your diploma and some new tips on how to run your practice or profession more effectively. Bring the whole office!

D) Executive Bear Watching! Don't have the time for a 3-Day Bear Watching Tour? Then check out our 1-Day fly-in Bear Watching Tours out of Victoria. You depart at 8 a.m. on a 6 passenger float plane for a 45 minute flight to Knights Inlet for Grizzly Bear Watching or Tofino for Black Bear Watching. You can't lose with a scenic flight over the islands and then arriving at prime bear-watching locations. This is a memorable day for those that don't have enough time to spend 3-4 days in Tofino or Knights Inlet. You return back to Victoria by 4 p.m.

Island Adventure Tours opens the Paddlers Casita on Piers Island

What the heck is a Paddlers Casita? Its a perfect retreat or get-a-way for 2 paddlers. This waterfront cabin features a large soaker tub, private deck, full kitchen and a large bed for two. The only catch is that there is no ferry to Piers Island and no store. There is a shuttle ferry 3 times a week and you can bring all of your provisions. You could also paddle over and then utilize the Casita as base-camp. Piers Island is located near Schwartz Bay Ferry Terminal and only a 1 hour paddle from Sidney. It is also only hours paddling to Gulf Islands National Park jewels such as Portland and Sidney Islands.

Great hiking on the island in 150 acres of forest, meadow and trails. Walk-on the Ferry from Vancouver, go to Sidney and get groceries and then head over.

The Paddlers Casita is suitable for couples of groups of two people. Cost is $125 per night for your own private cabin in the woods only feet from the ocean.

December 2002 / January 2003

Its Christmas, New Years and Snow Season! What an absolute blast! We had over 140 cm's of snow last week. The Bears' Den Lodge is open and filling up quickly. The 2003 season is already 75% booked!

When not schussing down the slopes we have been busy working on tours and projects for summer 2003. Look for:

1. Kayak the West Coast Trail - 3 day lodge-based, mothership paddling tour. This year we stay  in small groups in a large waterfront house in the small waterfront hamlet of Bamfield. This was simply an amazing tour last year and demand is strong for this year already. We have weekly departures on Friday mornings from Victoria.

2. Encircle the Elders - An exciting evening of West Coast Native dances, songs and legends from various cultural groups. First performance is February 21st. at Spectrum Auditorium.

3. Walking and Hiking Tours in Strathcona Park using the Bears Den Lodge as a base. 3-5 day trips including all meals, guides, lodge accommmodation and transportation. Self-guided and self-catered options available.

Rainforest Hiking in December? Sea Kayaking in January?

Absolutely!! If you call us we go! Some clients have called for some "Winter Rainfrorest Hiking" and "Coastal Rainforest Storm-Watching" tours and we have had a blast. The warm weather has helped but a little rain doesn't scare us anyway. More and more we are becoming a year-round operation. So when are we gonna have vacations then ??

Call for winter Rainforest Hikes, Sea-Kayaking, and Storm-Watching day trips from Victoria.

Trek of the Real Big Trees

I just returned from 3 weeks of hiking in the National Parks in the Sierra Nevadas, Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Park.
Okay okay I admit it! The Sequoia Trees in Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks are gigantic and dwarf some of our largest cedar, fir and spruce. But our unique species still tower and look amazing the way they meet the ocean.

For those this summer who made recommendations about the area - Thank you!
- Jeff

Kayak the West Coast Trail

Just returned from pioneering our newest tour on Vancouver Island and it was a blast! Attention all kayakers! This tour is incredible. We have partnered with the Tyee Lodge in Bamfield to offer what is truly an amazing experience. You can read about the tour on the "Ocean Adventures " page of our website. But let me tell you about this rocking and rolling adventure!

Day 1

We drive from Victoria and arrive in the magical town of Bamfield and transport across the bay to the Tyee Lodge. First-class waterfront accommodation with one of the best views on Vancouver Island. Hot-tubs and great food await but only after we do a warm-up paddle in the harbour. Our guide knows the local waters but doesn't know us and wants to check out our paddling skills. I am accompanied by Rick Hudson, journalist and 2 photographers. We are all experienced paddlers but appreciate the warm-up paddle to get used to the boats we will be using for the next two days. The warm-up paddle turns out to be a wildlife excursion. We see osprey, eagles, seals, otters and bear-tracks on the beach. We stor our kayaks up on a beach and hike through the forest to the outside coast. Here we hike along the shore from beach to beach. The only people we see are three local teenage boys and their dog skim-boarding in the surf. A great way to warm-up and acclimatize to the wild west coast. We head back to the lodge for a BBQ, hot-tub and then some flaming volcanoes in the Tyee Cantina.

Day 2

We rise at 5:30 a.m. in order to catch the calmest (and most beautiful) part of the day. Our boat is loaded with kayaks and gear and we head out of the harbour at 6 .am.. We round Cape Beale and make our way down the West Coast Trail. We unload at Tusiat Falls in 3 meter swells. We are rocking and rolling but no one goes over. We paddle along the West Coast Trail at a rate of 4 miles per hour. At this rate we could do half of the West Coast Trail in one day. We can't land anywhere along the shore as the swells are too big but we can get close to the falls and various, sea stacks and sea arches. After 2. 5hours of paddling we load back into the boat and head over to another spot along the trail. We arrive back at the lodge at around 3 p.m. and take a well-deserved nap. Spectacular paddling with many whale sightings!

Day 3

Today we depart at 8 a.m. and head over to the Deer Group Islands. We spend the day paddling through caves and exploring the Deer Group Islands. We all agree that we like the paddling here better than the Broken Islands (and no crowds too!). We stop at a beach for lunch. It starts raining and we duck into a cave for a dry lunch. We paddle back to the lodge in Bamfield and arrive back at around 3 p.m.. We say our farewells and get a boat ride over to the mainland side of Bamfield and drive 3.5 hours back to Victoria.

Why is this trip so awesome? Boat transport to the best spots for paddling depending on the weather. Great comfortable lodge accommodation. Liz and John of the Tyee Lodge make everything seamless and perfect. Unrivaled scenery! Flaming Volcanoes!

The idea of this trip is to Kayak the West Coast Trail. As this is the wide open pacific we have to wait for daily weather and then make plans for the day based on wind and tides. The big luxury here is having the fast kayak transport boat that can take us to the best spots that would normally be unreachable by kayak alone.

This was a first for Island Adventure Tours and the Tyee lodge. This pioneering trip was a complete success (except for one burnt lip). We are now offering this tour as a 3-day 2 night package (see Ocean Adventures). Be one of the first to Kayak the West Coast Trail.

Thanks, Rick, Philipa, Todd, Greg and the Tyee Lodge for a memorable weekend and I can hardly wait for the next trip!

New Galloping Goose Gourmet Cycling Trail!

Explore the West Coast Of Vancouver Island on a leisurely cycle tour on the Galloping Goose Trail.Depart the beautiful city of Victoria and peddle through farmlands, rainforests and meadows. We ride over trestle bridges and stop along the way at lakes that invite a swim. The 4- hour ride ends with sweeping views of Sooke Harbour. Our waterfront B&B features hot-tubs with panoramic views of the harbour. Tonight we are treated to a 5-course gourmet feast by Team Canada Culinary team-member Angelo Prosperi-Porta. This inter-active feast is memorable event as Angelo creates amazing dishes before your eyes.
After a gourmet breakfast (Angelo was a former pastry Chef in Whistler) you head out that back door and ride along the Galloping Trail to the old abandoned ghost town Leechtown. Island Adventure Tours Partners with the Le-La-La Dancers!

The Le-La-La Dancers are an authentic Kwakiutl First Nation Dance Troupe that has been performing for over 12 years. Last summer we presented a special event at the Ocean Pointe Resort entitled "Spirit of the Masks" in conjunction with the Le-La-La Dancers. This year we will be offering traditional Coast Salish welcome ceremonies and full evening dance presentations for groups. We will also be working with the leader of this dance troupe, George Taylor, to offer first-rate West Coast Native Culture Tours. It will be a pleasure to work with George again this year. By the way, did you see last July's National Geographic Magazine? Two full pages were dedicated to George Taylor and his amazing Grizzly Bear costume and mask. Two full pages in National Geographic Magazine! Now that's some exposure!
